Three Bangladeshis to be executed for murder

The UAE’s top court sentenced three Bangladeshi men to death after they were convicted of murdering a worker because he failed to pay back Dh100 to one of them.

The Federal Supreme Court (FSC) said it had sent the papers of the three to the UAE President for ratification of the death sentence.

The three had confessed in court to have killed their work mate by strangling him with a piece of cloth in 2009 after he refused to pay his Dh100 debt.

A coroner report showed the victim died of asphyxia after the three overpowered him and wrapped the piece of cloth around his neck.

The defence lawyer had tried to discount charges of premeditated murder, saying the three had visited the victim to get the money with no intention to murder him.

The court dismissed the lawyer’s argument and also rebuffed the defendants’ claims that there was no interpreter during their interrogation.

It said the three would be executed by available means. Execution in the UAE is normally carried out by a firing squad.
