The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced four Indians charged with attempted theft three-month jail terms.
AA, 48, plumber, AB, 26, assistant plumber, SS, 27, worker, and WM, 26, mason, were accused of attempting to steal cables from their employer Built Middle East Contracting at the Palm’s Fairmont Hotel project.
The attempted theft was discovered by a security guard who noticed that the cables were missing cables while the four suspects remained at the site although their duty time was over.
When AA was about the missing cables and why he was still in the site, the guard AN had been offered a bribe of Dh2,000 not to report the incident.
He was also shown a mobile phone video recording of AA paying Dh50,000 to another person in a bid to entice AN to accept the tempting offer.
However, the guard turned down the bribe offer and asked him to leave the site.
The guard found the missing cables hidden in a room in the site the following day.
AA continued his attempts to bribe the guard, offering him gold jewellery.
The guard refused the bribe offers and notified officials in the company.
DS, 59, director of HR department testified before the Prosecution that the company was carrying construction work at the project site and the four accused are the company’s employees.
AB, SS and WM had claimed that AA was the one who asked them to steal electricity cables. When confronted with the attempted theft, AA confessed to it, according to DS.
DS noted that the four have not been assigned by the company to carry out maintenance work at the site after working hours, as claimed by them.
