Tram in Sharjah: Where is it being built... click to know

A tram network is being built in Sharjah though it will only serve the residents and visitors of the Dh20-billion Sharjah Waterfront City.

The project, with 200 mixed-use towers, 95 apartment buildings, numerous hotels and service apartments, 1,100 plus villas, accommodating 200,000 people, will be served by a tram network, , making it the first project in the emirate to have an internal transit network.

Sharjah Oasis Real Estate Development Company, the developer of the project, has released no details of the tram network.

In May 2014,  Sharjah Investment and Development Authority CEO Marwan bin Jasem Al Sarkal told this website that the Roads and Transport Authority in the emirate was working on new plans for the road networks, whether it’s including a tramway system, a metro system or connecting it with new Etihad Rail.

Emirates 24|7 reported earlier that Al Reem Island master development in Abu Dhabi, which will house 210,000 residents, will have a light rail transit system. Besides, the Dh3.67-billion Al Maryah Central, a 2.3 million square foot shopping centre on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, will be to be connected to the Metro.

In Dubai, the Municipality will build a seven kilometres light rail system in its Dh30-billion Desert Rose master development, located between Al Ruwaya and Al Aweer areas across the Emirates Road, and link it to Metro Green Line.

Meydan, a Dubai developer, has said that the newly launched Meydan One district will have a tramway and be connected to Metro’s Gold Line.

In the UAE, Dubai has already set up a Metro and tram network, with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) working on extension of the public transport system.

The Dubai Tram, launched on 11.11.2014, stretches 10.6 kilometres in the first stage, spanning 11 stations located in the densely populated and activity areas.

The tram will extend 14.6 kilometres along Safouh Street with the entire tram network having 17 stations. It is expected to serve about 27,000 riders at the start of operations in 2014 and the ridership is anticipated to hit about 66,000 by 2020.

The RTA is also currently working on Route 2020, the extension of the Red Line to Expo 2020 site in Dubai South, with construction beginning in first quarter of 2016.
