Consumers irked by dealers over price hikes or other shopping issues have better shun going into an argument and call authorities on a free hotline number 600522225. More than 400 law-enforcers have been deployed through the local markets for this purpose.

The Ministry of Economy said it had set up that phone line to receive urgent complaints from consumers facing problems while shopping, adding that it currently receives an average 60-70 complaints daily.

It said the calls can be received for more than 15 hours daily from 7.00 am to 10.30 pm, adding that such complaints have allowed authorities to uncover more offences by dealers.

In a statement, the ministry said the number of offences by shops and other marketing outlets surged to more than 2,000 last year from 1,698 in 2010.

“More than 400 inspectors from the competent departments in the emirates are deployed in the market and they are cooperating with the Ministry on daily basis to ensure discipline in the market,” the Ministry’s undersecretary Mohammed Al Shehi said.
