A Syrian driver and an Indian visitor accused of drug smuggling and peddling received reduced jail terms as the Dubai Court of Appeal Sunday quashed their earlier sentences of life term.

The presiding Judge Eissa El Sherif sentenced the two to 10 years in jail and ordered them to pay a fine of Dh50,000 each, Khaleej Times reported.

Both would be deported after they serve the sentence.

The verdict remains subject to appeal at the Cassation Court within 30 days. The Indian visitor was found guilty of smuggling and possession of drugs for peddling while the Syrian was convicted of criminal complicity. As many as 99 capsules of heroin weighing more than 796 grams were seized from them.

The two were arrested in August last year from a bus stop in Al Satwa in a trap laid by officers of the Anti-Narcotics Department of the Dubai Police.
