As many as 13 people have lost their lives and 17 suffered severe injuries in 41 accidents caused by tyre bursts over the last five months in Abu Dhabi.

Shedding light on the importance of proper tyre care, Colonel Khamis Is’haq Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, stressed the need to check the tyres to avoid accident.

Abu Dhabi Police have launched an awareness campaign themed ‘Don’t End your life in Traffic Accident’, to educate people how critical a healthy tyre is for the safety of passengers.

A total of 20,343 vehicles were booked, fined Dh200 each and impounded for a week during the campaign after drivers were caught with invalid tyres.

“Motorists should examine the vehicle tyres and verify their safety. Expired tyres should be replaced with quality ones in order to avoid critical accidents that take place when tyres burst,” Col Khamis said.

Mohammed Saleh Badri, acting Director-General of the Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (ESMA), said traffic accidents due to tyre burst often happen when a car moves at a high speed and causes the vehicle turn over.

He added that a majority of accidents take place due to tyre related issues like using second-hand tyres or those of poor quality, overloading, storing tyres at highly humid places or where temperature is high, installation of tyres in a wrong way, braking, in addition to tyre wear and tear.

“A tyre has codes moulded on its side, indicating the manufacturing date, load capacity, maximum speed and other key facts about it that a motorist should know well,”
Badri pointed out.
