Minister of Environment and Water Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahd has issued an ordinance to regulate the import of cattle, sheep and goats from countries with a record of the Schmallenberg virus.

The ordinance based on the reports issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health sets a number of rules that ensures that the livestock being imported are free from the virus.

The importers should produce certificates to prove that the livestock being imported are free from the virus by abiding by the set rules.

When importing from these countries, a statement should accompany the consignment testifying that the animals come from the regions and farms which had not been affected by the disease, and a statement to the effect that the animals during the quarantine period of not less than two weeks prior to shipment did not show any symptoms of the virus. This is in addition to the certificate issued by the concerned laboratories proving that the livestock is free from the virus.

The ministry follows up the epidemic situation and determine the countries where the virus has been detected, in preparation to implement the new rule.
