UAE mulls letting prisoners meet wives in private in jail

The UAE has decided to allow inmates in its prisons to privately meet their wives to become one of a few countries to allow intimate meetings between married couples inside the jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Prison authorities have drawn up plans to construct additional buildings comprising rooms for such meetings when a decision is taken by the competent authorities, Emarat Alyoum daily said, quoting Brigadier Hamad Al Shamsi, director general of the punitive and rehabilitation institutions at the ministry of interior.

He said the ministry of interior has drafted a law for private meetings between married couples inside the prison building and that it has been presented to the justice ministry.

“The fatwa and drafting division at the justice ministry is reviewing this law before it is endorsed by the competent authorities,” he said.

“We have already started arrangements for this law, which is the first in the UAE to allow such meetings between married couples provided they conform to the UAE’s traditions and culture…new buildings will be constructed next to prisons for such meetings while any new jail building should be designed on this basis.”
