UAE residents take extra care with food

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has launched a social media campaign, urging residents to be extra cautious while transporting their groceries home.

The shift in temperatures, from air-conditioned supermarkets to the blazing heat outside, to the air-conditioned cars, could be tricky, if adequate safety measures are not carried out.

The food board lists out a few pointers to keep in mind to ensure food doesn’t spoil or contaminate due to the varying temperatures.

The authority warns consumers not to mix meat products with vegetables or fruits in the shopping cart in order to avoid cross-contamination. And, to keep chemicals (like floor cleaners and detergents) separate from the food stuff. They are also tipped to pick milk and milk-based products towards the end of their shopping.

Frozen food should not be left outside for too long, and the consumers must carefully read the food labels before making any purchase.

Residents are advised to head straight home after shopping, and avoid any stopovers, to ensure the food doesn’t remain in the car longer than it needs to. “Transport food only in an air-conditioned car and never put food products in the outside trunk,” reads the ADFCA food safety messages.

The food board also urges residents not to be tempted by the great Ramadan deals and to restrain from loading their shopping carts to the brim. “During Ramadan, shop responsibly and as needed to avoid food stacking in storage areas and refrigerators,” they tweeted through their official twitter handle.
