UAE schools win World Robot Olympiad International 2013
UAE teams participating in the World Robot Olympiad International finals 2013 in Jakarta were rewarded 1st and 5th places as well as the outstanding project.
Our Own English High School (Al-Warqaa in Dubai) won 1st place in the Cycle 3 open category, while Millennium School won 5th place at the Cycle 1 open category. Moreover, the Technical High School won the outstanding project award for “Firefighter Robot” project.
Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Adec’s Director General, congratulated the winning teams and called other teams to be more focused in next competitions organized at local and international levels. Dr. Al-Khaili pointed out that this achievement is the result of untiring efforts over the past years.
Dr. Al-Khaili said that winning such global competitions requires a lot of patience and continuous work to reach such high levels compared to the rest of the teams that have achieved great strides in robotics.
“Our students have proved that strong will and determination can lead to success,” he added.
Dr. Al-Khaili said that: “The previous competitions encouraged students to gain experience and compete on a global level. Our students and referees have gained experience over the past years and are now ready to compete with global peers in all scientific fields.”
Ms. Salama Al-Ameemi, Executive Director of Adec’s Organizational Development & Excellence Office and Head of UAE delegation, said: “Our students have shown significant focus to win the competition. Their efforts lead them to win the 1st place in the Cycle 3 open category, 5th place for the Cycle 1 open category and the outstanding project”.
Ahmad Al-Hammadi, Director of the UAE Team, said that the whole journey from and to Abu Dhabi was successful due to the cooperation of teams, coaches, referees and parents, which impacted students’ performance and focus. “Raising the UAE’s name and flag high is the key to this achievement,” he added.
Talaq Maatouq, a UAE referee, said: “Participating in such a global competition gave me a chance to enhance my refereeing skills and capabilities, as well as keep pace with the latest regulations in refereeing of robotics programming”.
Omar Abdulrahman Al-Tunaiji, a student at the technical high school, said that winning the outstanding project award is a source of pride for UAE students in the presence of thousands of outstanding projects submitted by other students. “The firefighter robot project aims to contribute to extinguishing fire and reducing firefighter’s injuries,” he added.
Maha Taha Al-Shameri, a student at Khalifa University, said that participating in such a global competition promoted her skills and allowed her to learn new techniques in robot programming. “My colleagues and I designed a robot which moves the balls from one place to another in a record time aiming to reduce effort and cost,” she added.
