UAE temperatures to dip further: 8°C forecast

Temperatures in the UAE are set to fall to 8°C today, according to the weather forecast by National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), adding that relative humidity is likely to increase over some internal areas tonight and early morning tomorrow.

The weatherman has also warned that the seas will remain particularly rough and winds could reach a speed of up to 65km per hour at times. The UAE’s weather forecast for the day reads: “Fair to partly cloudy weather in general, and hazy at times.”

It adds: “Fresh to strong northwesterly winds will continue over most areas, especially over the sea, with a chance of blowing dust/sand causing reduction in horizontal visibility at times, and another decrease in temperatures. The relative humidity is likely to increase over some internal areas during night and tomorrow early morning. Sea is rough to very rough in general.”

Temperatures are set to dip to 8°C in the country’s mountainous regions and 10°C in internal areas while coastal areas could see temperatures fall to 12°C.

According to the definitions in the global weather system, winds of more than 63km/hr classify as a tropical storm. The definition says: “A tropical storm is an organised system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds between 17 metres per second (33 kn) (39 miles per hour (63 km/h)) and 32 metres per second (62 kn) (73 miles per hour (117 km/h)). At this point, the distinctive cyclonic shape starts to develop, although an eye is not usually present.”

The UAE weatherman has warned that owing to such high wind speeds, sea waves could reach up to 10ft, and beachgoers and fishermen have been asked to be on an alert for bad weather conditions.

The NCMS has further warned of a chance of dust in suspension as well as blowing dust and sand, which it says will reduce horizontal visibility. Medical practitioners are advising those with asthma and other breathing disorders to remain indoors.

The most common symptoms experienced during a dust storm are irritation to the eyes and upper airways. People who may be more vulnerable than others are infants, children and adolescents, the elderly, people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, people with heart disease and people with diabetes.

Doctors have warned that for those in the heightened risk bracket, exposure to a dust storm may trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks and cause breathing-related problems.

The following precautions can help you protect yourself and minimise the adverse effects of a dust storm:

• Avoid outdoor activity. If you must go outside, spend as little time outside as possible.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a mask or damp cloth to reduce exposure to dust particles.
• Avoid vigorous exercise, especially if you have asthma, diabetes or a breathing-related condition.
• Stay indoors, with windows and doors closed.
• Stay in air-conditioned premises.

Dusty conditions

Meanwhile, yesterday the National Centre for Meteorolgy and Seismology (NCMS) forecast the temperature to decrease gradually over the western areas.

NCMS has warned motorists to be more cautious while driving due to low horizontal visibility owing to dust and sand.

In a statement on Monday, NCMS forecast fresh to strong winds in general over most areas, especially over the sea.

Blowing dust and sand were once again said to reduce horizontal visibility.

Temperatures are likely to decrease significantly.

The centre also cautioned beachgoers and seafarers against very rough sea conditions and high tides.

Motorists are also advised to drive carefully as horizontal visibility is reduced.

Sea levels rise; water flows on to roads

Meanwhile, strong winds kicked up a storm in the Kalba’a area of the emirate of Sharjah on Saturday night, sending sea-levels dangerously high, with water overflowing on to roads in some areas.

In the Suhaila area and near the Corniche Park of Kalba’a huge waves caused the sea water to exceed the breakwater and flow on to the streets.

The road leading to the emirate of Fujairah was also affected.

Al Anjad patrols of Kalba’a police station in cooperation with Kalba’a Municipality ensured the water was drained and regulated traffic to ensure there were no mishaps.

Beachgoers were prevented from approaching the corniche area.

Ahmed Juma Al Horh Director of Kalba’a Muanicipality was quoted in the Arabic press as saying, “The waves were high which led to the overflow of water outside the breakwater on to the corniche.

“The Corniche Park was flooded with water up to the main street in the city.”

Meanwhile, the weather forecast till today morning continues to remain bleak – with the sandstorm that obliterated the weekend for many continuing to blow over Dubai and the rest of the UAE.

According to the National Centre of Meterology and Seismoloy (NCMS), fresh southerly winds will continue affecting most areas, especially internal areas, causing blowing dust/sand, and reducing the horizontal visibility.

The NCMS’ 24-hour forecast from 9am Saturday till 9am Sunday, also put out a warning of rough seas, with waves between four and six feet high.

The northern and eastern areas of the UAE were given a chance of rain with weather, in general, forecast to be hazy and partly cloudy in general.

The National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) advises motorists to take precaution on roads as a reduced horizontal visibility is expected. Also those suffering from asthma are urged not to venture out.
