UAE to standardise perfumes from July

The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) has announced that a new mandatory standardisation mechanism for perfumes will go into effect from July.

Esma emphasised that as of next year any product of the perfume industry does not comply with a cabinet resolution of January 2014 will not be allowed into the UAE market.

The resolution, published in the official gazette, gives the industry one year from the date of issuance to fall in line with the Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS).

Farah Al Zarouni, Director of Standardisation at Esma, told a workshop that the new system would be applicable to locally-manufactured and imported perfumes.

He added that Ema would coordinate with the Federal Customs Authority and emirate-level customs departments to compile a list of banned products.

Studies estimate the GCC perfumes market at Dh11 billion with an annual growth of 20-30 per cent. The UAE is a key world perfume market having an annual growth rate of 10 per cent.

 Esma and the Fragrance Foundation Arabia will work together to introduce new standardisation of perfumes to control growing piracy and counterfeiting of leading perfume brands.
