Consumption of water is the highest in the UAE with average per capita consumption of 500 litres a day, around 82 per cent above the global average, said Mohammed Mohammed Saleh, Director-General of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa).
He said water consumption is three times more than the per capita consumption in the European Union countries.
He said the power consumption is an additional burden on the resources of the UAE in this sector which necessitated planning to launch awareness campaigns aimed at promoting a culture of rational consumption of energy in all segments of society.
He was speaking at a press conference in Dubai to announce the launch of a national campaign to rationalize the consumption of electricity and water in the Northern Region.
He said Fewa studies confirmed that the problem lies with low awareness among individuals about the importance of rational consumption.
