Used cars still parked in Abu Shagara

As Sharjah gears up to open the new car market near the Sharjah International Airport, at the Ajman-Sharjah boarder area, some residents of areas near the closed Abu Shagara market are upset as some of the cars removed from old market have been dumped in the residential neighbourhood of adjacent areas.

Some residents living near the Abu Shagara market told Emirates 24|7 their free parking slots have been occupied by used cars with 'export' number plates.

The new used car market, Souq Al Haraj in Sharjah, perceived as a premier destination for pre-owned car shoppers in the region, is set to open on Thursday.

Sharjah Asset Management, the investment arm of the Sharjah Government, is the body responsible for the market’s management.

“We have been parking freely in this area between the residential buildings. On a fine morning, we found a number of cars with export number plates. It appears that they are dumped in this area by the used car dealers of Abu Shagara, who were facing a Sharjah Municipality ultimatum to remove all the used cars parked in the market within 48 hours. We are now unable to find parking near our building,” said Babu, a resident of Al Maktha Building near Al Majaz Park near Abu Shagara.

A watchman working in the residential building in the area added: “Not all used cars from Abu Shagara are shifted to the new market. Some traders are smartly parking their used car stock in the free parking slots in the residential neighbourhoods. It is putting pressure on the residents, who cannot park there now.”
