Motorists in Dubai who violated speed limits in the first 11 months of 2013 hit 1.2 million, or an average of 3,592 per day, according to Dubai Traffic Department statistics.

Among these, 959,845 cases were recorded for exceeding the speed limit by 21-30 kmph, while 190,110 violators exceeded the limit by 31-40 kmph.

At least 50,990 offences were recoded for over-speeding between 41 and 50 kmph during the same period, while the number of cases of speed violations between 51 and 60 kmph was 16,671; and 8,243 drivers surpassed the limit by 60kmph.

Gen. Mohammed Saif Al-Zaffin said that despite awareness campaigns and patrols on the street, motorists were violating speed limits.

Excessive speed is one of the major causes for fatal accidents, he added.

Fine for over-speeding by 60 kmph is Dh900 and 6 black points, while a fine of Dh400 is applicable for motorists exceeding the limit by 10kmph.
