Wife sues husband for pre-marriage cheque

An Arab woman in the Eastern oasis town of Al Ain used a fresh marital rift with her husband to take him to court to force him to pay a Dh100,000 cheque he gave her before marriage 13 years ago.

The court charged him of issuing a dud cheque while the wife demanded the full payment of the money. But a clever defence lawyer persuaded the judge to shut the case and allow the husband to walk free.

The Arabic language daily Alkhaleej said the husband issued the cheque for his wife when they were engaged nearly 13 years ago.

It said he gave the undated cheque at his fiancée’s insistence after he split the engagement and wanted later to return to her.

“The wife wanted that cheque as a guarantee that he will not do it again…after they married and had three children, she assured him that she ripped the cheque,” it said.

“But when they had a rift recently, she produced the cheque and took her husband to court…during hearings, the defence lawyer told the judge that the husband issued the cheque for the marriage to be completed not because he owed her any money…the judge was convinced of the lawyer’s argument and closed the case.”
