A Nigerian woman who attempted to smuggle more than 264gm of marijuana in wooden cubes hidden in medicine plastic containers was awarded 10 years in jail by the Dubai Criminal Court.
JRJ, 30, was also ordered to be deported after serving her jail term and the payment of Dh50,000 fine.
On July 1, at 5am, JRJ arrived at Dubai International Airport and at the last checkpoint of Dubai Customs, Khadeeja Ahmad, inspector suspected the passenger.
She told the inspector that this was her first visit to Dubai as a tourist.
Searching her luggage, the inspector found a yellow sack that contained four plastic containers. Opening one of them she found wooden cubes stuffed in forcibly and marijuana wrapped with nylon.
The inspector had to cut the plastic containers to retrieve the cubes that contained herbs that looked like marijuana.
At first JRJ claimed that it was medicinal herbs and about the plastic bag she denied knowing anything about being wrapped inside the plastic containers.
She claimed that someone had given it to her while she was at Lagos airport to hand it over to someone in the UAE.
