A total of 18 young expatriates adults are facing hard times.

They failed to get any employment and live a dependent life. All because they are suffering from Thalassemia.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Dr Essam Dohair, from the Dubai Thalassemia Centre said: “All these 18 Thalassemia patients are equally healthy and productive like normal people if they get blood transfusion and take their medicines on time. “Unfortunately, many employers still feel that there is no future for these patients, and if employed, they will be a burden on the organisation.

“They also believe that these patients will die soon, thus, they don’t want to waste time on hiring and training them. This is not correct, and unfair.”

Dr Dohair added that most of these young patients are university graduates and highly qualified. “Their only problem is that they are Thalassemia patients. Despite this, they are fully qualified.”

He pointed out that these Thalassemia patients just need to take one day off every month to get the blood transfusion.

“Apart from that, they are fully productive, and can work the whole month like their other normal colleagues at work.”

Dr Dohair added that Emirati Thalassemia patients get jobs.

“And those patients who are unemployed get monthly financial help from the Ministry of Social Affairs.
“They don’t have big problems. On the other hand, expatriate patients are the ones who suffer unemployment, as they have to be sponsored by their parents, and also stay dependent on their parents, which makes life difficult from them.

“Especially for those who are above 25 years of age.”

Dr Dohair called upon private and public companies to ease the problems of these expatriate Thalassemia patients, and offer them a chance for employment.

“They are living a difficult life. I wish public and private companies can help in making their lives better by offering them a job to allow them live a decent life and depend on themselves, instead of being dependent on their parents.”
