Your weight in gold: New deadline set

Just days after the Dubai Municipality decided to double (and triple) the gold rewards for the biggest weight losers, they have decided to extend the final weight check deadline from August 19 to August 30.

The reason for the change is the overwhelming response the civic body has received since the campaign was launched on July 19.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, announced the new dates, highlighting that the final weight-check will be conducted over four days. The cut-off date to register for the ‘lose weight, win gold’ initiative will remain unchanged on July 31.

The municipality also revised the gold rewards, stating that every participant who loses between 1 to 5 kg will get 1 gramme of gold for every kilo lost.

For each kilo after the 5 kg mark, the weight loser will get 2 grammes of gold for each kilo.  Participants will be entitled to get 3 grammes of gold for each kilo they shed after 10kg. The minimum weight to lose will remain unchanged at 2kg.

Mohamed Al Noori, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations, told Emirates 24|7: “There are no rules and regulations. Everyone is invited to come in and get fit. There are no hidden costs or demands. Everyone is welcome to come and sign up.”

He said there will be fitness experts at the registration centres to help schedule your weight-loss process. There will also be a nutritionist, who will list out what to eat and what not to.

“We don’t want you to lose weight (unhealthily) to win gold. The idea is to create a healthy lifestyle, and that is why we will provide you with all the essentials for it,” Noori said.

And, for those rare cases that demand intense attention, they will be sent to medical centres for free consultation on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

While gold might be the initial draw, Noori is confident that once the residents realise the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, they will be motivated to stay fit.
