Zebra crossing violations: Dubai Traffic Police fine 45,000 generating Dh9m

In 2012, Dubai Police issued traffic fines of Dh 200 each to 45,000 pedestrians for crossing roads at points where there was no zebra crossing, Dubai Traffic Police Director General Major General Mohammed Saif Al Safeen said.

Revenue of Dh 9 million was generated from these fines.

The Traffic Police will be starting a campaign against pedestrian deaths.

The campaign will be kick-started by issuing pedestrian safety manuals in English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Urdu.

These will be distributed in major labour camps and through the sales network of Al Bayan Water Company, which covers many residential and labour camps in Dubai.

Most of those fined for illegal crossing of the road are South Asians.

Forty-two pedestrians died in different road accidents last year.

Last week, an Indian salesman was crushed to death while he ventured to cross the Al Etihad Road late at night.
