A Bangladeshi private company owner in Abu Dhabi is facing a Dhfive million penalty for hiring foreign workers who are not on his sponsorship although he says he has done so in good intention, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
A court earlier ordered the employer, identified only as SB, to pay a fine of Dhfive million, prompting him to appeal the sentence on the grounds he does not have enough funds and was not aware of the offence.
“The court charged him of illegal hiring and providing housing to absconding workers but he said he had done so in good intention to help them and that he was not aware he was violating the labour law,” the Arabic language daily Emirat Ayoum said, adding that trial was adjourned to Sunday.
