The UAE’s population was estimated at around 8.264 million in mid 2010, the second largest in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia, according to official data.

Expatriates stood at nearly 7.316 million, accounting for around 88.5 per cent of the country’s total population, showed the figures by the National Bureau of Statistics, which sharply revised up the UAE’s population.

Previous official estimates put the country’s total population at nearly 5.5 million in mid 2010 and the centre gave no reason for the sharp rise in the estimates.

The report showed Emiratis were estimated at 947,997 in mid 2010, around 11.5 per cent of the total, making the UAE among the Gulf countries have the lowest proportion of natives to the overall population.

A breakdown showed males stood at 6,161,820 in mid 2010 while females were estimated at 2,102,250.

Expatriate males were put at 5,682,711 and females at 1,633,362 while national males were estimated at 479,109 and females at 468,888.

Abu Dhabi, by far the largest emirate and the UAE’s main oil producer, has the highest number of nationals, standing at 404,546 in mid 2010.

Dubai came second, with 168,029, followed by Sharjah with 153.365. Emiratis were estimated at 97,529 in Ras Al Khaimah, 64,860 in Fujeirah, 42,186 in Ajman and 17,482 in Umm Al Quwain.
