A massive blaze erupted at Abu Dhabi-based Costless electronics shop and caused heavy damage before it was brought under control by firefighters

A large number of fire engines and police cars unleashing their sirens rushed to the shop adjoining the Abu Dhabi Co-op society on Mina road near Zayed port after receiving reports about the blaze.

Police said the fire started at a shoe shop at the entrance of the mall before spreading to the sprawling Costless shop, which occupies most of the mall’s ground floor

Witnesses said the mall was packed by Friday shoppers when the blaze erupted but only one woman suffered from suffocation and was treated on the site

“I don’t know how it happened but we were inside the mall when we smelt smoke and heard people screaming and running,” said Jassim Hariri, who was with his family at the Co-op mall on the western top of the city

Police said the fire started at the shoe shop before spreading to the adjoining Costless hall and damaging a large number of electronic items

“We managed to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the supper floor. We are still investigating the cause of the fire at that shop,” a police spokesman said.
