Golf cart collides with train; husband killed

A golf cart carrying a man and his wife across rail tracks in rural upstate New York has collided with a freight train, killing him and badly injuring her.

State police say 57-year-old Charles Turk was driving the gasoline-powered golf cart Sunday afternoon in Otego (oh-TEE'-goh), a town 75 miles southwest of Albany.

They say Turk tried to cross the tracks at a private agricultural crossing when he collided with the engine of a westbound Canadian Pacific train.

Troopers say the Bloomville resident was found dead beneath the overturned cart beside the tracks. His 58-year-old wife, Cynthia Turk, was lying nearby with broken legs. She was airlifted to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.

A state rail safety inspector is investigating.
