Cabinet approves resolutions to develop federal electricity, water services

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has said the UAE is heading steadily toward developing key infrastructure sectors, notably electricity and water due to their essential roles in strengthening the national economy.

"Our aim is to provide decent living to citizens and keep pace with rapid economic changes to bolster the state's competitiveness and sustainable development,” he added.

Sheikh Mohammed was addressing the Cabinet session held on Sunday evening, July 28, at the Presidential Palace in the presence of Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

He reiterated that the state plans to further develop its infrastructure in all sectors, adding that the investment in infrastructure speeds up growth and economic prosperity.

The Cabinet approved the resolutions of the Federal National Council (FNC) on the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) regarding the development of electricity and water services to cope with the urban boom in the country.

It also approved the draft law on regulation of the auditing profession.

The new draft law includes a number of additions and updates that meet the requirements of next period. The last law in this respect was enacted in 1995.

The Council of Ministers has approved Emirates System for Control of Lighting Products that aims to upgrade efficiency of energy consumption of electrical lighting products. The system also includes safety and disposal requirements.

It also issued a resolution on the safety regulations for vessels with small cargo that are not included in the International Marine Conventions in the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States.

The Cabinet approved the forming of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowment chaired by Dr Hamdan Mussalam Maktoum Al Mazrouei and eight members with experience.

It also approved the restructuring of Board of Directors of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (RTA) chaired by Mohammed Ahmed Al Qamzi for four years and subject to renewal.

The Council of Ministers approved the restructuring of Board of Directors of the National Transport Authority chaired by Dr Abdullah Belhev Al Nuaimi, Minister of Public Works.

It approved a host of requests submitted by the FNC on the Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The Cabinet approved the request of the FNC to discuss the policy of Emirates Post on service expansion and increasing demand on the postal services, as well as the discussion of the National Transportation Authority regarding the rules of navigation in the UAE waters and ports.

About the foreign investments, the Cabinet also approved to increase UAE’s share in the capital of the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF) and the Arab Investment and Export Credit Guarantee Corporation ( AIECGC).

It also approved the issuance of third UAE report on energy, agriculture, industry and wastes that could affect the climate change.

The Cabinet approved the cooperation and mutual administrative assistance agreement in customs matters between the UAE and Argentine to strengthen the economic cooperation and trade agreement between the two countries.

It also approved four agreements on air transport with Mexico, Romania, Armenia and Laos.
