In a historic moment, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, led the nation's celebrations of Flag Day at the Union House on Wednesday afternoon, where the founding fathers hoisted the flag 42 years ago.

Sheikh Mohammed, who was accompanied by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, said, "We renew our allegiance and promise to the people of the UAE to serve them and their dignity, to sacrifice our souls for the UAE soil and be loyal to the flag and keep it flying aloft."

Addressing children around him, Sheikh Mohammed said, "The flag is a trust that we received from our founding fathers... it is a trust with my brother Sheikh Khalifa, with me and with every Emirati man and woman and a trust in the hands of next generations."

Later, Sheikh Mohammed, along with a group of students, watered the Union tree which he planted a year ago, and told the students, "We pledge to work faithfully for the welfare of our nation and we will be loyal so long as we live ... a citizen at his work and study or soldier at his camp serving his nation, which unite us and provide us with the motive to be the best forever, realising greater achievements year by year."

Sheikh Mohammed said that he was pleased with the enthusiastic national response to the flag day campaign.

"The feelings we sense in our children bodes well for the future of our State... the flag day campaign we launched last week will run until the 2nd of December."

He affirmed that, "We have united the flag-hoisting event to say to all that we are not emirates, we are the State of the United Arab Emirates, and to instil in our generations the value of the flag as a symbol of respect to our State."
