Mohammed meets Unesco chief

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum receives Dr. Irina Bokova, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Unesco (Wam)

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai has received Dr. Irina Bokova, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Unesco.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Ms. Bokova reviewed a number of educational and cultural issues, and the role of Unesco in helping the people of poor countries.

The Unesco Director-General commended the role of UAE's leadership, government, and educational, charitable and humanitarian institutions in supporting Unesco's educational and training programmes.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed stressed that the UAE provides humanitarian and educational aid for all needy people regardless of their ethnic, religious or geographical affiliation, noting that the country is providing all kinds of assistance and logistical support possible for Unesco, to enable the organisation to fullfill its message.

The meeting was attended by Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and The Future, and Khalifa Saeed Suleiman, Director-General of the Department of Protocol and Hospitality in Dubai, along with a number of officials.

Mohammed receives ITU Secretary-General

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has received Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, based in Geneva.

During the meeting, which was held in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, the two sides discussed ITU's role in establishing the rules of cooperation and coordination between telecommunications authorities in member states in light of the rapid technological developments in the telecommunications sector and efforts to use these technologies to serve humanity and connect people.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid stressed the important role that communications play in human and economic development and the importance of mobilising available technologies to develop the sector in order to keep track of the demographic, economic and cultural variables of people living all around the world.

The ITU Secretary-General praised the UAE's telecommunications sector, saying that the technology, hardware and equipment it uses surpasses those in many other countries, making it the destination of choice for investors and international companies seeking a high-level and integrated infrastructure, with the two most vital sectors being communication and transportation.
