Road and Transport authority has initiated a campaign from July to educate motorists about the use of the road shoulder, highlighting its importance and use.

The Director of Traffic at RTA Traffic & Roads Agency Hussein Al Banna said: "The aim of the Campaign is to reduce the number of accidents resulting from the inappropriate use of the road shoulder; whether for overtaking or parking. Paying attention to this sort of traffic cases is part of the awareness campaigns organized by the Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior.”

The drive themed: "For How Long ….?"; which focus on alerting drivers to the common & frequent mistakes caused by commuters in using the yellow line. The lack of proper knowledge in most cases result in accidents causing many casualties and material losses.

As a part of the campaign RTA with the help of Emirates Driving Institute has prepared educational leaflets titled "Road Shoulder Safety Guidelines" which will give a detailed explanation on the use of the road shoulder.

Drivers are permitted to use the road shoulder only in some exceptional cases like a car break down or an emergency. If a vehicle is parked in the yellow border due to any other reason , it will be considered a major offense and will be obligated to pay a heavy fine.

The guide book will be available at RTA customer service centre, key petrol stations car rental centers and mega transportation companies.

Simultaneously there will be training workshops held in Agency in public & private entities.

Al Banna concluded by calling upon motorists to comply with the traffic rules, and avoid offences such as overtaking from the road shoulder; which is punishable in law by a 600 dirham fine along with 6 black points, while parking on the road shoulder would attract a fine of 200 dirhams.
