Two ships with UAE aid head for Benghazi

Two cargo ships have set sail on Sunday from the Turkish port of Mersin for Benghazi in the framework of UAE-Turkish joint humanitarian assistance operation for Libya.

Under the joint relief operation, approximately $4 million worth of humanitarian assistance, including 32 tons of medicine and medical equipment; 388 tons of basic foodstuffs; 20,00 tents; 20,000 blankets; 72 tons of drinking water; two mobile kitchens as well as a mobile bakery - able to produce 10,000 loaves of bread per day - are being dispatched to Libya.

A joint Turkey-UAE Red Crescent team are also travelling to Libya on board the ships, in order to oversee the distribution of the relief supplies, and to provide certain basic services.

Whilst the initial focus of the 29 person, 16 from the UAE and 13 from Turkey, team will be Benghazi they will also assess the need and opportunity for humanitarian outreach to regions beyond Benghazi.

The ships accompanied by a frigate provided by the Turkish Naval Forces, are expected to reach Benghazi tomorrow.
