The Dubai-based Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) gave a presentation to New York University students in Abu Dhabi, highlighting its own successful experience in the global space industry.

“One of our key strategies is to promote knowledge transfer, exchange of experience and innovation support, for the benefit of the United Arab Emirates and especially for Emiratis,” said Mr. Salem Al Marri, Head of Projects and Space Missions at EIAST.

“The visits to educational institutions across the UAE aim at enhancing the awareness of students about the role of advanced technology in supporting strategic sectors. They also help build stronger relationship with the higher education bodies, which are a key source for future professionals and engineers,” he added.

The presentation was attended by a large number of students. It highlighted the main achievements of EIAST, especially space satellite projects such as DubaiSat 1 & 2 and their various applications and uses in different fields. The presentation also explained the progress achieved by the DubaiSat 2 project planned for launch later this year.

Al Marri urged the students to extend and expand their knowledge and specialize in advanced technology fields which offer numerous opportunities for growth and development. He said that the UAE will need talented candidates to drive the space sector developments in the future and their active participation will further enhance UAE’s global positioning in the scientific and technology arena.

The presentation proposed further involvement by Arab scientists in space technology including their participation in the production and development phases. The EAIST presentation pointed out that this is the only effective way to transfer knowledge across the region.

EIAST is rapidly completing the DubaiSat 2 project. It is a joint development programme between EIAST and Satrec Initiative of South Korea, in which 16 UAE engineers have been working on the design, development, testing and manufacturing of the satellite. The participation of the UAE engineers, who are currently working in South Korea, has increased by 100 per cent from the DubaiSat-1 project.
