A Saudi man was caught on camera as he threatened to shoot at passers-by in the Gulf Kingdom before he immediately surrendered to police.

It emerged later he was holding a dummy gun and was looking for his missing daughter.

Saudi newspapers on Wednesday carried a video film showing the angry 54-year-old man grabbing his nine-year-old daughter and pointing a gun at the crowd, who gathered on the street in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah to appease him and convince him to put the gun down.

The unknown man had come to Jeddah looking for his 18-year-old daughter after he was told she had run away with two men from Jeddah, the second largest city in the world’s dominant oil power.

Some Saudi newspapers earlier said the man had tried to snatch a little girl with a real gun but his attempt was foiled by police.

“The little girl appearing in the video is the man’s daughter according to police sources,” the Arabic language daily Alriyadh said.

“The man was using a dummy gun to threaten people to stay off him…he was looking for his daughter and two men believed to be with her…he was mad and appeared as if he did not know what he was doing before surrendering.”

The paper said police had arrested the two men, who the father accused of persuading her to run away from her family.

“We are interrogating the two men and the father, who is from the northern region….we will give details once the investigation is completed,” Jeddah police spokesman Lt Nawaf Al Bouq said.

Newspapers said the 69-second film was posted on YouTube and was shot by some passers by on Thursday morning.
