Huge fire in Sharjah guts five warehouses

A huge fire broke out in a Sharjah factory yesterday, causing widespread damage to the contents of five adjoining warehouses used for storage and manufacture of metals, wood and plastic.

The authorities managed to bring the fire under control within three hours of it being first reported, and no injuries or casualties have been reported from it, according to a report in Al Khaleej newspaper.

The factory where the fire originated is located at the sixth industrial area of Sharjah, and was used for manufacturing and storage of materials, plastic and sponges.

Colonel Wahed Al Serkal, Director General of the Sharjah Civil Defense, said that units of the Civil Defense from Sharjah and Dubai, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain rushed to the location on receiving a report at 10.30am.

“In addition, cars for transporting water (tanks) from each of the municipalities of Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai took part in the operation of extinguishing the fire,” he said.

Units of Al Anjad of Sharjah Police formed units to close down all roads leading to the location of the fire, he added, which allowed fire tenders, ambulances and water tankers to enter the area without obstruction, leading to the fire getting under control quickly.

Colonel Serkal pointed out that “the severity of the fire and the presence of strong winds led to the spread of the fire spread and incinerated a number of warehouses and shops adjacent to the factory, but firefighting units were able to control the fire at 1.30pm.

He added the preliminary results of the fire showed that the fire destroyed and devouring to the contents of the three factories and warehouses, and there has been no casualties.
