If you haven’t already done so, today is your last chance to rush to a typing centre and register for your National ID card, without incurring a daily penalty of Dh20, which will be capped at Dh1,000.

With no sight of any extension of the deadline in play, those residents, who had waited for one, are now rushing towards typing centres to ensure they don’t end up paying the fine.

According to officials at Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), as long as residents register and file for renewal of their National IDs, they are OK. “Filling in the ID card application at any typing centre in the emirate of Dubai before June 1, 2012, will avoid the customers the fines,” confirmed Ayesha Al Rayesi, Project Manager, Planning & Quality, Acting PR and Marketing manager.

In the run-up to the Dubai deadline of May 31, the EIDA had devised numerous awareness campaigns to encourage residents to register for their National IDs.

A multi-lingual tweet campaign was launched. Under the handle @EmiratesID, the tweets were written in Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Russian, Mandarin and English, and it read; “There’s just a week left for the May 31st deadline. #Dubai residents hurry up and apply for your #EmiratesID! #UAE”

The EIDA also provided residents with a multi-lingual brochure titled “Don’t Panic”, explaining the registration procedure.

All children, aged below 15 years, must also apply before October 1, 2012, after which they will have to pay penalty.  “Yes, it is mandatory for all under-15s, nationals and residents, to register before the deadline, failing which they will be charged a penalty of Dh20 per day, up to a maximum of Dh1,000,” clarified Diyaa Abdul Al, senior officer media and communications at EIDA.

However, children whose parents have residence visa up to November or December this year will be exempted. “They can apply for the Emirates ID, when they renew their visa.”
