A private Learjet registered in Mexico crashed off the coast of Florida, killing at least two people, officials said.

The Learjet 35 with four people aboard crashed Tuesday evening after taking off from Fort Lauderdale on a trip to the Mexican Caribbean resort island of Cozumel, the Mexican civil aviation directorate said.

The plane was carrying two pilots and two passengers.

The US Coast Guard said debris from the plane was found about two miles off the coast. It confirmed two dead and said rescue teams were looking for survivors.
