Dubai Traffic Prosecutors have revoked 212 licences in the first four months of the year for offences ranging from drink driving to causing fatal accidents.
The decisions come as the authorities are looking to impose stricter sanctions against reckless drivers, Gulf News reported.
"The DubaiTraffic Misdemeanour Court revoked, upon traffic prosecutors' impeachment, the licences of 191 drivers for involving in drunken driving cases and 21 licences for drivers who caused fatal accidents," Chief Traffic Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution (TPP), said Saturday.
"We will do whatever it takes to enforce the traffic law accurately and strictly — we do so to preserve peoples' lives and protect public and private properties from getting unnecessarily and recklessly damaged," said Bu Farousha.
Apart from revoking licences, the traffic court has also banned many drivers from renewing their licences for periods ranging between three months and one year, according to the gravity of their offenses, Bu Farousha explained.
"As per the Traffic Law's amendments in 2007, TPP constantly refers drivers involved incases of drink-driving, fatal accidents or inattentively damaging public/private properties, to court and ask for revoking their driving licences and banning them from renewal as well," Bu Farousha said.
The court has revoked licences of 181 drunk drivers and banned 10 of them from renewing their licences. The court also revoked 19 more licences for causing fatal accidents and banned two of them from renewing licences.
According to TPP's statistics, of the 19 defendants who caused fatal accidents and damaged properties, four licences were revoked for three months, four licences were revoked for six months and 11 licences were revoked for one year. Meanwhile, two defendants were banned from renewing their licences for one year each.
Among drinking-driving cases, the traffic court revoked 84 licences for three months, 62 licenses for six months and 35 for a year. Three drivers cannot renew their licences for three months, four for six months and three for a year.
Earlier thismonth, the traffic court jailed an Iraqi woman for one year, revoked her licence for one year and banned her from renewing it for six months after she was convicted of driving negligently and accidentally killing two pedestrians after jumping a traffic signal.
She was also ordered to pay Dh400,000 in blood money to the parents of the victims.
