Mother forces minor girl into prostitution

A Sri Lankan mother was arrested near a hotel in an area close to Colombo by the special police unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) on Monday night.

‘Lankadeepa’ reports that the mother engaged her daughter into prostitution to earn money.

An officer attached to the NCPA said that they had been looking to arrest this particular woman for about six months.

She was trapped after her mobile number was tracked down.

The arrest was tactically made when police posed as a client and asked to meet near a hotel closer to Colombo.

The suspected woman had handed over her underage daughter to a couple in Kottawa to be engaged in prostitution and the couple was produced before the court after being arrested about six months ago.

The woman used to visit the couple’s house every month to collect the money.

The girl's aunt filed a complaint after which the couple was arrested.

It was revealed that the suspected woman had handed over her daughter for them to earn money by engaging her in prostitution, NCPA officer said.

NCPA had received information that the suspected woman had told her daughter that they could earn more money while the victim was attending school and the girl was taken into NCPA custody when the couple was arrested.

The woman arrested was 35-years of age and a resident of Kalutara, who had engaged in extra-marital affairs with several men after her husband, abandoned her.

Further investigations are carried out by the NCPA’s special police unit.
