Obesity, debt put man under arrest

Mohammed Abdul Amir is lying at hospital in Sharjah under heavy police guard. The charge is that he owes money and the malady is that he has become an incredible hulk weighing 250 kg after gaining over 150 kg in just four years.

The young man, who has three little sons, did not exceed 85 kg when he worked at a local company nearly four years ago. Everything was fine for him until he started to gain weight rapidly because of an ailment.

“I was happy and the job was fine so I decided to borrow Dh143,000 to furnish my accommodation…I had not realized I would suffer from this problem,” he said, quoted by the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum.

Mohammed had been admitted to Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi before he was moved to Al-Qassimi hospital in Sharjah so he would be under police guard since the debt charges are filed at a court in the northern emirate.

“I now can not move and find difficulty in breathing…I live on tranquilizers and respiratory systems but this is only a temporary treatment…I had been due to undergo a surgery at Khalifa hospital in Abu Dhabi but it was delayed because of the court case…because of this, I lost my job and can no longer pay back my debt, leaving my mother supporting my children.”

Emarat Alyoum, which did not specify Mohammed’s nationality, said he is appealing for financial aid to settle his debt and undergo the operation.

Citing a Mafraq hospital medical report, the paper said Mohammed is suffering from extreme obesity, hypertension and what is medically termed as “sleep apnea”, in which a patient has one or more pauses in breathing during sleep.
