More than one million speed offences have been committed by drivers in the UAE over the past three months despite intensified police patrols and the installation of more road cameras, according to traffic police data.

A whopping 1.58 million road offences have been recorded by traffic police across the UAE during that period, involving speed, reckless driving, illegal overtaking, failure to use seat belt and negligence.

Speed offences alone totalled around 1.19 million, nearly 75 per cent of the overall traffic offences in the country, already one of the countries having the highest traffic violations and accidents.

“The traffic offences in the past three months were higher than those committed in the same period of last year, when they stood at 1.43 million,” Albayan newspaper said, quoting Brigadier Gaith Al Zaabi, director of the traffic coordination division at the ministry of interior.

“There was an increase despite the intensified campaigns carried out by the traffic police in the country…this should prompt us to revise the present penalty system to deter those who refuse to abide by the law.”
