Twenty public schoolteachers in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato are facing charges of dishonesty and misrepresentation after they were found to have submitted fake eligibility certificates.

The teachers have been relieved of their duties after a thorough investigation done by the Civil Service Commission (CSC), and are now in the custody of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Reports reaching radio stations in Manila quoted DepEd-ARMM Secretary Jamar Kulayan as saying that complaints against these elementary and high school teachers had been with the CSC for quite a while.

There were also reports earlier that cases of schoolteachers having fake eligibility were rampant in Cotabato City, the capital of ARMM, and other parts of the region, which is home to Muslim minority.

Found in central Mindanao, the country’s second-biggest island, Cotabato City is an enclave of SOCCSKSARGEN, whose official designation is Region XII. The acronym stands for the region’s four provinces and one of its cities—South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City.
