Filipino horror: Mother, two kids murdered

MANILA A mother and her two young children were hacked to death while another daughter was seriously wounded in an attack Friday in their home in the central Philippine province of Negros Oriental by people believed to be mad at the kids’ father.
 
The police identified the fatalities as Mergie Esteban Eslao, 22; son Wilfred, 6; and daughter Larrabel, 5. Another daughter, two-year-old Annabel, suffered a stab wound in the stomach and was recuperating in a hospital in Dumaguete City, about 93 kilometres from the proince’s Tayasan town, where the victims lived.
 
Police investigation was being conducted to identify the perpetrators, who attacked the victims inside their home in Tayasan’s Sitio Calantocan, Barangay Tambulan, the ‘Philippine Daily Inquirer’ reported yesterday.
 
Inspector Fred Redira, acting police chief of Tayasan, said the police were trying to verify unconfirmed reports that the criminals were trying to get back at Mergie’s 24-year-old husband, Werlie, whom neighbours suspect to be behind the series of thefts of farm animals.
 
Werlie was out of the house when the crime was committed, as Mergie had asked him to run an errand for her at nearby Sitio Patik, also in Barangay Tambulan. He returned to the house in the wee hours of the morning and found his wife and two children dead while another child was sent to hospital for her wounds.
 
Two years ago, an unidentified armed man went inside the victims’ house and threatened Werlie’s family, Redira said. He added that a member of Werlie’s group was also killed recently.
 
It was Mergie’s father, Wally, who first discovered the crime, as he and his wife Terry live about 100 metres away from the victims’. Terry was reportedly awakened by screams and cries of a child coming from Mergie’s house at 1am on Friday.
 
Police said Wally found Wilfred’s body sprawled on the kitchen’s area with stab wounds in the chest, left shoulder and arm, and a hack wound at the back.
