Germany opening doors to Pinoy nurses

Manila and Berlin are set to sign an agreement for the deployment of Filipino health workers to Germany, as the latter is opening its doors to nurses from the Philippines.

Philippine Ambassador to Germany Maria Cleofe Natividad said the agreement would place the Filipino health workers on a par with their German counterparts in terms of professional training and work environment.

“Under the agreement, Filipino workers may not be employed under working conditions less favourable than those comparable for German workers,” said Natividad, who met with officials of ZAV, or International Placement Services, in Bonn on March 8.

The Department of Foreign Affairs today said that German Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Ursula von der Leyen would soon travel to Manila, to formalise the deployment agreement with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), a government agency tasked to deploy Filipino workers abroad.

It may be recalled that Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle had discussed enhanced labour co-operation in Manila last month.

Von der Leyen, who supervises ZAV, said this federal employment agency, together with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), “will ensure that Filipino nurses will have adequate linguistic and professional preparation, free of charge, prior to entry to Germany”.

This would be part of what von der Leyen described as a “triple win formula”.

“It is all systems go for the Triple Win Project,” Natividad said in a statement. “When the agreement is signed, then we have a co-operation framework that enables Filipino nurses to work in Germany.”
