‘Majority in Philippine Senate are adulterers’

Many of those in the Philippines’ upper chamber are apparently disloyal to their spouses, if a feisty senator is to be believed.

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago was quoted by media reports on Friday as saying that “majority” in the Senate are “adulterers”, in a move to defend senatorial bet Risa Hontiveros from groups against the Reproductive Health (RH) law.

Defensor-Santiago and her colleague Senator Pia Cayetano, who are staunch advocates of the RH law, have endorsed the candidacy of Hontiveros, who is also a strong supporter of issues affecting women.

RH law, whose implementation has been temporarily stopped by the Supreme Court, pushes for family planning, guaranteeing women access to methods of contraception, fertility control and maternal care, as well as sex education for schoolchildren.

“There are a lot of adulterers in the Senate and we’re not angry with them,” Defensor-Santiago said in a speech delivered in Quezon City, as quoted by the ‘Philippine Daily Inquirer’ last Friday. “They should stop it.”

This was where she and Cayetano had endorsed Hontiveros, who is running under the coalition slate of the ruling administration.

When pressed by reporters whether she was referring to members of the upper chamber, she stressed: “The majority …  the majority of the Senate.”

Her defence and endorsement of Hontiveros followed allegations that anti-RH groups, mostly sympathetic to the Catholic Church’s stance against unnatural ways of birth control, have been waging “politics of hatred” against the senatorial bet.
