PBA: Milkmen dilute Coffee Mixers 86-67

Alaska Aces registered its first win over San Mig Coffee, which is being coached by Tim Cone, who used to be with the Coffee Mixers.

Showing warrior-like physical and mental abilities, Alaska Milk routed San Mig Coffee, 86-67, during their best-of-five semis series on Monday night in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, at SM Mall of Asia Arena, in Metro Manila’s Pasay City.

“I think, for us, the monkey’s off our back,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo, whose team won for the first time in 10 games since Cone left the Milkmen for a more lucrative job with the Coffee Mixers. “Failure is temporary, that’s what I’ve been telling my players.”

PBA, or Philippine Basketball Association, said the Aces came back strong, with Rob Dozier delivering a “monstrous performance” coupled with shining moments from his teammates after their 69-71 loss to the Mixers last Saturday.
“It’s a battle between two competitive teams, and it’s playoff time,” Trillo was quoted by the PBA on its website as saying. “It happens in the heat of the moment.”

He said he expects his team to “remain aggressive and on attack mode” when the semis series resumes after next week’s PBA All-Star Week, in the southern Philippine province of Davao del Sur.

Reigning Best Import Denzel Bowles had no response to Dozier’s raging run on the court, and had to accept his PBA career-low of eight points.

“Bowles looked tired, and he’s their life,” Trillo said. “I think we also did well against him Saturday and he just got to where he wanted in the end.”

The Mixers only had 14 points in each of the first two quarters, and to 16 in the third period. While Joe Devance and PJ Simon topscored with 15 points, no other Mixer finished in double figures.
