Saudi Arabia’s top scholars have issued a fatwa (religious edict) permitting the burning of Quran copies to protect it from being desecrated.

The Permanent Fatwa Committee, headed by the Gulf Kingdom’s Mufti (top Islamic scholar) Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh, issued the fatwa allowing Moslems to destroy Quran pages by burning them so they will not be offended.

“Koran copies can be burned and buried under earth so they will not be abused or desecrated as they could be treaded on by mistake…this should be done in pure and clean places,” said the fatwa, published by Aljazirah daily.
