Some bakeries have reduced the size of the bread to maintain the same price, complain Ras Al Khaimah residents.

Residents alleged lack of supervision over the emirate's bakeries and demanded that authorities should penalise the bakeries to stop exploiting consumers, reported Khaleej Times.

Many bakeries have apparently reduced the size of the bread and its number from five to four or even three in a packet being sold for Dh3.50 to Dh5, the daily quoted an angry resident.

A housewife said she had noticed that while the bakery did not charge her more, the size of the bread had certainly reduced recently. Some residents are also bracing themselves for price hike during the Ramadan month.

Ali Al Mazrui, Head of the Department of Consumer Protection at the RAK Department of Economic Development, told the daily that the Department of Economic Development (DED) has intensified its inspections to control the market and monitor those who exploit the consumers.

Routine inspections revealed large number of violations committed by outlets in the emirate including operating businesses with expired licences or without obtaining permission from the DED, sale of products at increased prices, absence of price lists and others. The violators were issued official warnings and they pledged not to repeat the violations, he added.
