Nearly 148,000 couples tied the knot in Saudi Arabia in 2011 but 31,000 were divorced, according to official statistics.

“This means there was an average 406 marriages a day against 85 divorce cases,” said a report by the Saudi Ministry of Justice.

It showed the capital Riyadh had the highest divorce rate in 2012, with 8,292 recorded cases.  There were 3,094 divorce cases in the Eastern region, 2,780 in the southern province of Asir, 1,669 in the western town of Medina, 1,423 in the central province of Qasseem and 1,101 in the northern province of Tabuk.

Sitting atop a fifth of the global proven oil deposits, Saudi Arabia has one of the highest divorce rates in the world.
