Saudi has 3.5 million fat children

Nearly 3.5 million children in Saudi Arabia are suffering from overweight because of bad eating habits and lack of exercise, according to a local doctor.

The problem has given rise to hearth diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure among the children while nearly 20,000 Saudis died because of obesity in 2012, Dr Ayed Al Qahtani, a well know surgeon, told the Saudi Alarabiya satellite TV channel.

He cited government figures showing nearly 36 of the Saudi population of nearly 29 million are suffering from overweight.

“This figure is underestimated…the real ratio could be as high as 70 per cent….there is an urgent need for measures to tackle this serious problem,” he said.
