Residents of the Saudi capital Riyadh committed nearly 2.788 million traffic offences in 2012, an average 7,340 violations a day.

The offences were nearly 11 per cent higher than in 2011 and failure to use the seat belt emerged as the main offence in the city of five million.

Police data published in the Saudi Arabic language daily Aleqtisadiah showed Riyadh drivers committed nearly 421,000 seat belt offences while nearly 298,000 violations involved wrong parking. There were also around 221,000 speeding offences and 205,000 violations involving jumping the red lights.

Saudi Arabia, the largest Arab economy with a population of about 29 million, has been classified as having one of the worst traffic records in the world along with other Gulf hydrocarbon producers.
