Road accidents killed 763 people in Oman in the first nine months of 2011, an average of more than two people daily, police records showed on Sunday.

The deaths were a result of 5,862 accidents that took place in the Gulf country during that period as a result of speeding and other violations, Oman’s traffic police said in a report carried by local newspapers.

The accidents resulted in 8,615 injuries, according to the report, which put the number of victims in the same period of 2010 at 611 deaths and 7,483 injuries.

Like other Gulf oil producers, Oman is suffering from high road mishap rates because of persistent traffic violations despite tougher measures.
