An 85-year-old Saudi woman has memorised nearly a fifth of the Quran although she has never been to school and is suffering from heart diseases and diabetes, a newspaper in the Gulf Kingdom reported on Tuesday.

The woman has emerged as one of the few regular attendants of Quran memorisation classes for old people in the central Saudi town of Shaqra although she lives nearly 20 km away, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

“Although she is around 85 years old and is suffering from heart problems, diabetes and hypertension. The woman has not been absent from the class not even single day,” the paper said, quoting a teacher.

“She appeared determined to memorise part of the Quran and succeeded…her teachers said she has memorised 20 Suras (out of the 114 Suras).”

The paper quoted one teacher as saying he was surprised when he found that the woman can read the Quran although she has never been to school. “She cannot read any other stuff…this is one of God the Almighty’s miracles.”
